Momentum in Start-up Companies

Momentum might be tricky. You might lose it without even noticing and reviving it might need out of the box thinking. You also need to watch out from momentum that is not based on strong merit as you will surely be very sorry for having great momentum while providing not so great service (or product). This needs to be said before continuing. Generally, positive and quality based momentum can stem from many factors and can push the business in the right direction, fast. Faster than usual. Let’s discuss timing and reviving.

Timing

When we are discussing timing, we are mostly referring to momentum created naturally. You are a group of friends who just decided to form a new company and provide a great product or service. In most cases, if all are fully dedicated to company's success, momentum is created naturally. You are in “to do” mode and set up tasks are completed very quickly. Problem..discussion..solution. Problem..discussion.. solution. Add to it the “freshness” of it all and you get the idea. The momentum created is obviously positive and can help you in overcoming obstacles. Even to start to scale. What to look for in order to maintain? Make sure to keep the tasks written down and quickly solved and completed. Don’t let tasks be stuck at one of the Company employees or service providers. Press and power through.

There are additional moments when momentum is created naturally. Let’s say for example that you have closed your first sale. Congrats. celebrate. Even if you are a one man show. And leverage this good feeling to acquire the next client. Make it a habit. Acquire clients. We are a company the acquire clients. Done!

Reviving

On the flip side, what to do if your team (or company) lost its momentum? Quick answer – create it. artificially. Celebrate an easy win and let all know. Looks obvious to all? nevermind. We are a company that celebrates even the obvious. Are you a later-stage company? Providing service or products to clients? Good, ask for their feedback. As soon as possible. Remember that one of the ways to create momentum is by conducting labor and receiving positive feedback quickly. Do it.
